I am going to replace almost all if not all the suspension components, but the engine in the m3 is a lot more upgrade able. Them again, I could supercharge the 325, but then I have to Whether it was an E30 or the quintessential E36, as long as you had decent torque, rear-wheel drive, and a limited-slip differential, you were in for a good time. Today, if you’re looking for a new, slide-happy BMW, you have quite a few options—and the officials in Munich want to make sure you know what you’re getting, with some yeah a 323 (and also a 325) is REALLY slow and would be a great safe first car. My first car was a E class and the maintenance wasn't too bad. if the 50k E46 is in good condition I say go for it, he won't hoon around and will love it. An example I will give is that my Dad gave me my first Omega watch.
The S50 motor and e36 powertrain is by far one of BMW's most reliable that they've ever come out with. That said, it's still a 20 year old BMW M, so proceed with caution when buying. Don't just pull the trigger on the first one you see. Check for maintenance records and definitely get a PPI.
